Sometimes a company’s quest for profit leads it to actually do good things for everybody. Google is just such a company! Its latest project will place all newspaper content, from every newspaper around the globe, online. This is truly a monumental task one that permits anyone to access any article, from any newspaper, ever published. This kind of service requires massive data centers which must house huge computers to process all the data. In fact, incredibly as it may sound, Google will start placing data centers in water and use energy produced from waves to power them. Honestly this is not a April fools’ joke, it’s only September, folks!

After launching satellites to encourage and aid internet use in developing countries they are now taking to the seas. Many people hate Google out of jealousy because of the way the company, after a mere ten years, has taken over the world. But it is hard to really hate this company, frankly, it’s much easier to admire and be in awe of it.

The idea that all newspapers, from the earliest ones to the present, could be accessible to all is just a good thing. What it does for research into various disciplines is just mind boggling. Of course Google would not be doing this, would not invest huge sums in developing this idea and its infrastructure, if it wasn’t making money. Let’s face it, however, this also allows for many side benefits. A high number of the world’s greatest advances came from individuals or companies looking for a profit while at the same time they changed the way regular people live. Economic capitalist theory says that an individual’s personal gain will lead to advanced products and services that will benefit everyone. Google has designed all its services for profit and then some. While doing this, it has been the locomotive that pulls the internet and the world to new and unexplored areas.

Google is giving us a glimpse into how they will undertake this gigantic project. The company wants to have barges built three to seven miles off shore, and in 50 to 70 meters of water. They actually have a patent pending for the technology of a self sustained unit using something called Pelamis Wave Energy Converter Units.

The next frontier for Google may be underwater cameras for Divers using GPS, even in the depths of the ocean. There doesn’t really seem to be a limit for what Google can do. For a while now it has been a lot more than a internet company, it has opened vast horizons for newer and newer technologies with the riches of its ideas!
