Today’s Jerusalem Post writes:

‘Israel won, but could have gone deeper’

Israel clearly won the latest round with Hamas, but could have gone deeper into Gaza and done greater damage to the organization, according to military analysts in the US media who were visiting the region this week.

“I think you achieved what one Israeli general called ‘changing the reality’ in which Hamas operates, but I think you were too restrained and could have gone deeper into Gaza,” Lt.-Gen. Thomas McInerney, a 35-year veteran of the US Air Force and a Fox News military analyst, told The Jerusalem Post Monday after touring the Gaza periphery and receiving briefings from Israeli officials

The military analysts’ trip was organized by the New York-based Project Interchange, affiliated with the American Jewish Committee.

The Gaza fighting is seen in the US as a healthy demonstration of Israel’s capabilities, according to Lt.-Col. Rick Francona, a former US Air Force intelligence officer in several theaters and military analyst for NBC News.

Frankly, there never was a doubt about Israel’s military prowess, the problem has always been the Israeli government’s lack of resolve about finishing a job they start.

Unlike in the wake of the 2006 Second Lebanon War, “the conversation in the US revolves around Israeli decision-making – what’s the endgame? Are they going to remove Hamas? It doesn’t question Israel’s capabilities. You’ve won the battle,” Francona said.

Both analysts said Israel seemed ready to face down Hamas in a long-term fight.

Israel seemed ready to face down Hamas in a long-term fight… seemed?!? Seemed, Lt.-Col. Rick Francona?

The cease-fire was “just the end of this round, and that seems to be Israeli policy right now. The best Israel can go for is to manage the conflict until Hamas can be made to go away,” said Francona.

The cease-fire was “just the end of this round Why is this merely one round? Why could it not be finished so that there be no need for more rounds?!?!?

“The Israeli public’s support for this war mutes global opinion,” noted McInerney. “When a nation is united in its right to defend itself, it makes it more difficult for Europeans, the Left or the Arab media to counter that.”

Even so, said McInerney, “your leadership is too sensitive about world opinion. I know why Israel didn’t [drive deeper into Gaza] – you have an election coming up and a new [US] president taking office, but you need to gain the freedom of operation in Gaza that you have in the West Bank.” Commenting on the unilateral cease-fire announced on Saturday, he suggested that “Israel did not want to destroy Hamas. I believe you should have.”

“Your leadership is too sensitive about world opinion. I know why Israel didn’t [drive deeper into Gaza] – you have an election coming up and a new [US] president taking office, but you need to gain the freedom of operation in Gaza that you have in the West Bank.” Throughout history world opinion cared little for the Jews, why should the Israeli government care about the thoughts and opinions of those who regard them as a nuisance, at best? Why should it make a difference what other countries (who are not going to defend Israel, who are not going to protest when missiles start again flying again over Israeli communities) think about Israel defending itself? Why is world opinion more important to the political eunuchs at the helm of Israel’s government than the welfare of their own constituents?

Even foreign military analysts remark, you were too restrained and could have gone deeper into Gaza but Ehud, Ehud and Tzippi do not care. So what if 12 or 18 months from now they have to do it again? Is the safety of Israeli communities, so inconsequential in their eyes? “The Israeli public’s support for this war mutes global opinion,” noted McInerney. “When a nation is united in its right to defend itself, it makes it more difficult for Europeans, the Left or the Arab media to counter that.” With a government too scared of their shadow, an Israeli government more interested in others than in their own, defending their people and guaranteeing their safety seems inconsequential. Pity!

One Response to “Through American Eyes”

  1. United States Carol Herman from California, United States on January 21st, 2009 6:14 am

Gaza is NOT Lebanon! Lebanon was a country of hills. Well dug in! And, getting resupplied through Syria; and from the sea. It also wasn’t Israel’s job to “cure this.”

While in the White HOuse, Bush, a TOOL of the Saud’s was hoping for “regime change.” And, during the summer of 2006 Olmert was TOLD! To take the IDF into syria and remove Assad’s head.

Believing that AMerican presidents promise “protection,” and then watch other presidents takes this away is OLD HAT! Eisenhower, in 1956, gave Israel assurances, that LBJ, in 1965, flushed down the toilet.

What should be noticed? How poorly American presidents fare when they are anti-semites at heart. You can practically hear the toilet flushing on their legacies: LBJ, NIXON, CARTER, and BOTH BUSH’s come to mind!

Olmert was brilliant here! He timed it so that Dubya’s last days in office had him worried; but unable to do more than “tell Condi to screw Israel at the UN. This was done after 1:00 am, AS the White House thought the Jews in Israel would be fast asleep. ANd, the paper at the UN “changed” from the libyan crap to the more serious document that almost saw the USA signing on. Olmert told the TRUTH!

He also didn’t want to piss on Obama’s parade.

Please don’t expect to see this in the pages of the New Yuk Times.

There are reasons Olmert “went in.” To absolutely flatten the terrain from where the missiles were flying out of; AND to destroy the stock of rockets & missiles.

Will it take time for the truth to travel? Here it is: Every other home in gaza was either booby trapped. Or contained ammunition. Lots don’t, anymore.

And, the really heavy lifting was done in the first 4 minutes! And, Olmert stayed long enough for Bush TO GO! Exit Bush. Enter Obama on a stage where nothing competed with him as he took his oath of office.

REMEMBER THIS: OLMERT DARED, while Bush just played his script for the saud’s.
