From today’s TimesOnline:

Al-Qaeda threatens to kill British hostage unless Abu Qatada is released

Al-Qaeda’s North African arm has threatened to kill a British hostage within 20 days unless Britain releases the extremist cleric Abu Qatada from a maximum security jail.

In a message posted on a well-known jihadist website, the group demanded the release of the Palestinian preacher in return for that of a British hostage captured this year.

Abu Qatada has been named by Spanish judges as Osama bin Laden’s right-hand man in Europe and is regarded as the most dangerous jihadi ideologue to have operated from Britain. He is being held in isolation at Long Lartin high-security jail in Worcestershire while he fights deportation to Jordan.

The unnamed Briton is thought to be one of a group of European tourists who were kidnapped in January on the border between Mali and Niger after attending the African music “Festival in the Desert” near Timbuktu. In a statement, the organisation al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb said: “We demand that Britain release Sheikh Abu Qatada, who is unjustly held, for the release of its British citizen. We give it 20 days as of the issuance of this statement.”

After that the British hostage would be killed, the group continued, adding that it would hold a Swiss hostage until “we have achieved our legitimate demands”. Another Swiss and a German hostage taken with that group have already been released, the Mali Government said yesterday. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said that it was analysing the statement and called for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages. It offered no further details.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb is an Islamist group fighting to overthrow the Algerian Government. It forged an opportunistic rather than operational link with bin Laden’s group after its inception.

Its activities spread outside Algeria initially in pursuit of the profit-making opportunities presented by smuggling and trafficking in the restive Tuareg areas. A splinter group, most probably those responsible for the kidnapping, took refuge in the Mali-Niger border areas after crackdowns in Algeria.

Abu Qatada has long denied having connections with al-Qaeda, although he was identified in 1999 as a member of the group’s fatwa committee. A Spanish indictment against the Madrid bombers named him as bin Laden’s European representative. Abu Qatada arrived in Britain on a false passport in 1993 and was detained under emergency anti-terror laws in October 2002.

The death of even one innocent is an affront against all of mankind BUT… it must be weighed as to its consequences against society as a whole.  The British government has two very clear choices:

a) Give in to Al-Qaeda’s demands and possibly save this hostage, while releasing a known ideologue of terrorism. To release Abu Qatada will only embolden terror groups to kidnap more and more westerners for they’ll know the respective governments will always bow to their wishes. At the same time Abu Qatada, who is a wanted man in Jordan – a Muslim country – will be able to spew his venom, incite and plan further attacks against the West.

b) The other choice is to refuse to negotiate with terrorists, and possibly run a punitive action against them, thereby making it clear that Al-Qaeda WILL NOT DICTATE to the West.

If the unnamed British hostage is killed, his blood will forever stain the foreheads of his cowardly terrorist killers, if Abu Qatada is released the blood of countless innocents will rest on the heads of Brown, Milliband and the infamous Jacqui Smith!

It is obvious to anyone with a smidgeon of brains which is the better of the two unfortunate choices. Is it clear however to Gordon Brown and his FM David Milliband, or will they save one life only to doom a thousand?!?!?

As much as the British have been caving into the real extremist over the last few years, all in the name of ‘multiculturalism’, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Brits did cave. Tough decision…save one life…maybe, or save thousands….probably.

I can smell the Brits bending over from here. The cornish pasties & curry is overwhelming.

    Ultimatum?
This is not an ultimatum, this is a clear threat. This is the way all these bum get they power from. They threatening people all the time. If you don’t give this we will blow up your that. If you don’t convert, we will kill you. All the time in history since the world began in 502 AD LOL when Mohamed first showed his hate and disgusting murders, from then on, the world has only saw violent acts and no love for the world only for the Islamites who love that sword stuff with all the killing and they like this power. This is all from intimidation and threats. Ultimatum is exactly the political word to use. But this is really meaning you do what we say or we will get you. This is not fair playing this is scare people. They also learn from MKohamed the killer how to threat people and hurt them and hate them. This is why all Christian must ask the Pope to put these haters far down.
