I’m starting to wonder if I still live in the US, or if I’m merely in the midst of some horrible nightmare. From Breitbart.com:

Republican leader attacks ‘fishy’ White House request

A leading Republican US Senator on Wednesday sharply assailed a White House request for supporters to help track “fishy” claims about President Barack Obama’s plans to overhaul US health care.

“I am not aware of any precedent for a president asking American citizens to report their fellow citizens to the White House for pure political speech that is deemed “fishy”or otherwise inimical to the White House’s political interests,” John Cornyn of Texas wrote US President Barack Obama.

“As Congress debates health care reform and other critical policy matters, citizen engagement must not be chilled by fear of government monitoring the exercise of free speech rights,” he wrote.

Cornyn was responding to a message on Tuesday from Obama’s director of new media, Macon Phillips, who asked on an official White House blog for members of the public to forward questionable claims to the administration.

“There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation,” said Phillips.

“Since we can?t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we?re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov,” said Philips.

Cornyn, who also leads the Republican effort to expand its 40-seat minority in the Senate, asked how the White House would use the information collected, what actions if any the White House would take against citizens linked to “fishy” claims, and whether they would be told about being flagged.

“I can only imagine the level of justifiable outrage had your predecessor asked Americans to forward emails critical of his policies to the White House,” Cornyn wrote, referring to former president George W. Bush.

“I suspect that you would have been leading the charge in condemning such a program — and I would have been at your side denouncing such heavy-handed government action,” he wrote.

Yes, gentle reader, I can just imagine the outcry if Dubya’s people had sent out such a request… I can just see the headlines in the DailyKos, the Huffington Post and the rest of the left’s mouthpieces rightfully decrying such an assault on individual rights. I can also this blog, most conservative blogs and publications, joining in to loudly protest such a move. Do you remember how Nixon and his “plumbers” were disgraced and, except for Nixon (who was forced to resign by an almost unanimous Congress!), all served jail sentences for spying on the Democrats in Watergate? It was lesser crime than this one, but serious enough an assault on the Constitution to remove Nixon! Ah, the hypocrisy… I guess The Chosen One believes that by winning the election he has a mandate to do whatever is necessary to pass his personal agenda and bulldoze whoever is against it, Constitutional rights be damned!

I guess my post Obamacare – The Real Meaning of Hope and Change from last Tuesday would fall into the category of “dangerous, fishy” to the White House’s interests. Why? Because having read portions of it, I exhorted others to do so as well? Because I alluded to to pages 424 to 428 and took the seditious, dangerous, step of asking others to read it as well?!? After all Obama, Himself, confessed he hadn’t read it, none of the Representatives and Senators who will vote for H.R. 3200 has read it!

In all fairness to President Obama and his people, such reporting activities are admittedly not of their own invention. It’s been long tried with various degrees of success… Most notably and recently, it was standard practice (to name just a few places) in Communist Russia; it’s been tried under Mussolini’s fascista regime in Italy and under Hitler’s regime in Nazi Germany… Is there a compelling reason, under Obama, to join ranks with such scourges of history?!?!?

Should I and thousands of bloggers expect the FBI to knock on our doors (to send us to some hidden Gulag, I presume) because we dared read what neither the President nor Congress has bothered to read? OUTRAGEOUS!!!
