Livni criticizes Netanyahu for invoking Holocaust at UN

Kadima leader Tzipi Livni became the first Israeli politician to criticize Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s landmark speech to the United Nations in an interview she gave on Saturday afternoon to Channel 2.

Livni said that Netanyahu made a mistake when he invoked the horrors of the Holocaust in his criticism of Holocaust-denying Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

She said the comparison could harm Israel’s diplomatic efforts and make Israelis question their security.

“We have to be careful not to encourage the world to think that Israel was established because of the Holocaust,” Livni said. “When Obama said so in Egypt, there was a justified uproar. It is wrong to compare any event in history to the Holocaust, because it minimizes the most horrible historic event that happened to the Jewish people. It also makes Israeli citizens feel less secure. The Jews of Israel in 2009 are not the Jews of Europe in 1939, and I’ve said this to Netanyahu.”

Tzippi Livni, can’t get used to the fact that she’s not the Prime Minister, she can’t understand her dream did not come true (as far as Israel is concerned, that is something to be thankful about!). Therefore, oblivious of how she’s been marginalized by a increasingly right and center leaning electorate, she can’t keep her mouth shut.

NetanyuTzippi, dearest, in case you haven’t heard. Ahmadinejad has almost made a career of denying the Holocaust ever took place. True, 11 nations walked out from his speech, but 181 remained! They needed to be reminded about the UN Charter, or at least they needed to be be shown up as hypocrites. And that is exactly what Netanyahu did! He also reminded them that the Jewish people hold a deed to the Land of Israel, far older and far more legitimate than the UN General Assembly! He had the courage to push back, even if it was only with words.

The Jews of Israel in 2009 are not the Jews of Europe in 1939, and I’ve said this to Netanyahu. Tzippi’s rebuke shows that she herself still possesses the ghetto mentality of 1939. Why should Bibi have shied away from showing up the hypocrisy of those who sat raptly listening to a tyrant, a murderer, a torturer, a rapist, a liar (whatever he commanded his Basij and prison personnel to do, he’s as guilty as if he did all that himself!)? Isn’t time for Israel to show a strong leader, not afraid of exposing the truth?!?!? Tzippi Livni’s shameful stint as Foreign Minister showed a total lack of courage and a serious disconnect from the Israeli public.

In every country, in every political strain, there are those who are now, there are hasbeens, there are wannabees and all too many a neverwas…

Jewish history, from biblical time onwards, is filled with instances of courageous women who saved their people time and again. Even in the 20th century, the late Golda Meir showed strength, courage and honor (in spite of her various political mistakes) sorely lacking in Israel’s present political arena. Unfortunately, for herself and for Israel, Tzippi is not destined to go down in history as someone courageous or even as someone politically smart. Perhaps she should resign from political life, her time has passed, her party is disintegrating and Arik Sharon is no longer able to protect her. Retirement from politics would bring Tzippi some immediate benefits, she just might just find the time to take kabbalah classes with her new friend Maddona.

Bibi Netanyahu gave the best speech ever.
If Livni needs attention, let her just stand up and sing a song in public. Is she just a sore loser?
Criticizing Mr. Netanyahu after such an important, excellent, on target, in your face, speech was very crass and inappropriate of her. She could have said the same thing in three weeks.
