UN-9A few days before Ahmedinejad’s infamous speech at the UN, a few days before President Obama’s spineless talk at that same institution, a good friend of mine posted the following on his New York Daily News blog (Flashpoint):

I am reminded of a conversation I had many years ago with the then United Nations Chief of Protocol. As you would expect, he was a personable, rather dapper individual, quite pleasant to talk with.I asked him about the requirements for membership in the international body, and he replied with a proud smile that any sovereign state had a right to be a member.

“Would that include Nazi Germany if it existed today?” I asked him.

“Why, yes,” he replied, “a sovereign state is a sovereign state.”

Indeed.

Every petty dictator is an esteemed member of the UN. Whether it is a ruthless tyrannical government like Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, murderous election fraudster Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, etc., etc., they are all members with full rights and can sit in judgment of whatever country or action they wish.

I hadn’t visited the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan since my college days, though I’ve passed by and attended rallies across from it many a time since. Granted the world of  40 years ago was very different, safer and more naive. I went there yesterday, because I wanted to understand what had changed so much as to make everything the UN supposedly was created to oppose become suddenly acceptable in its halls, offices, General Assembly and Security Council rooms. I wanted to understand what cataclysmic event(s) had made a mockery of everything the UN once claimed to stand for. I wanted to sit and meditate in its beautiful garden of exotic trees, plants and statues. There is a lot of construction going on and the sculpture garden is currently closed as most of the building is going on there.

UN-10

I was able to stick the camera in through the grating on 1st Avenue. Took this shot of a statue, donated by the US, mostly covered and hidden behind protective materials to shield it from the construction around it. This sculpture is made from Pershing missile parts, it represents St. George slaying a dragon. The symbolism is obvious, war must be eradicated!

Further behind, presently covered from sight, is another statue donated by the former USSR in 1957. In stark Socialist Realism style it portrays a worker beating swords into plowshares and quotes the pertinent biblical passage from Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3 (They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning knives; nation will not lift sword against nation, nor will they learn war anymore). The symbolism entwines with irony, especially so, if you keep in mind Soviet Russia’s history at the time.

The UN: Where else can you find diplomats who are part of murderous regimes that rape, murder and pillage their peasantry and at the same time are afforded license plates that guarantee them respect, privilege and immunity?

Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia would be treasured members in this cursed club.

Stalinist Russia was a treasured member (Russia still is). In fact it is (since the UN’s inception) a permanent member with full veto powers in the Security Council. As for Nazi Germany, it was the very reason that led to the UN’s creation!

The irony that the Kaddafis, the Hugo Chavezes and the Saudi Sheiks of the world are asked to sit in judgment on the perpetration of evil is something that is often lost on many in the media.

The mainstream media with their multicultural agenda, their dislike of America and the west, cares little what these despots may do as long as they are staunchly anti-American!

I was there with my camera, trying to capture the stark contrast between the lofty ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the reality this organization has degenerated into. In a corner of the main visitor’s lobby I saw a small photo exhibit on the plight of African women in places like the Congo, etc., how they cope with the government backed rapes to subdue and control a whole population through fear, through terror, through hunger. Ah, yes! Rape is a very powerful political tool and many a tyrannical government has used it fully.

Very tellingly, I saw no photos of the horrendous deeds in Darfur or Somalia, nothing was mentioned about their systematic trampling of human rights, nothing was mentioned about the persecutions by the governing ethnic Arabs against the non Arab (sometimes, fellow Muslims) in Southern Sudan… Could the omissions, the indifference have anything to do with the fact that the UN Human Rights Council is overwhelmingly populated by countries that know no human rights, assorted little countries controlled by ruthless despots, Islamic nations and their sympathizers?!?!?

The picture exhibit, what it shows and what it omits, are a powerful statement of what the UN has become. I took merely a few poignant details of various, very powerful, photos by world renowned photographers like James Natchwey and others. But I’ll let the shots speak for themselves:

UN-1

UN-6Looks like a teenager with two children… all three refugees

UN-7The world is mean and very dangerous;
the pain, the loneliness are unbearable

UN-4In a shack, a mother and her two little children behind some netting.
Wondering what will be… Will war ever end? Will there be food?
Will her children have a better future?

UN-2Will this mother see her child have a better life?

UN-8The hands in handcuffs hide the face…
He’s every man… she’s every woman, living under tyranny!

UN-11Will the silent tears or the loud crying ever stop?

Look at the eyes, gentle reader, the photograps have captured the pain, the hunger, the shame, the fear, the horror… The UN was supposed to alleviate such problems and usher in a new era of peace and prosperity. It has failed miserably! Precisely because of its all inclusiveness.

“Would that include Nazi Germany if it existed today?” I asked him. “Why, yes,” he replied, “a sovereign state is a sovereign state.” The UN makes no demands that its members show even the most minimal regard for human rights or even human lives. Since it was created in 1945, (to end war and senseless killing, to stop hunger, to promote human rights) all too many wars broke out in far too many places on this planet, human rights continue to deteriorate and despots roam freely through the UN’s hallowed halls.

Rabbi Yaakov Spivak at Flashpoint concludes:

If this is the best we can do to make a better world, tell them all to pack up and go home. Manhattan would better be served using the place as a parking lot.

Indeed!
