The Future of Search

[Last week, an Israeli friend guest posted about Israel's technology companies. In that post he mentioned the Gogimon Search Machine. Today, that company's marketing director emailed me asking if he could post something as well. Before denying his request, as was my first impulse, I read the proposed post and thought you all might find it rather interesting.]

Many may be wondering where we go from here with regard to the next generation of search. Google, Yahoo and MSN are running in the same race with Google far in front Yahoo a distant second and MSN barely out of the gate. Some say things are fine now, there is no need for change as we have become accustomed to a Google world. This Google world still bases its rankings on link strength and key words.

There are more than one hundred other parameters used for final rankings but the main ingredients are still links and keywords. What this means simply is that if a site can appear on many powerful sites Google, Yahoo and MSN will consider the site itself is a powerful, relevant one to the particular search. The internet geeks among us call this link juice, the more link Juice the better it is for the site.

Google will then give such a site a high page rank while ranking it high for selected keywords. Sounds great doesn’t it? It would work quite nicely, if manipulators would not try to artificially change results. That’s where the trouble starts as links are bought and sold by almost everyone. The most successful internet marketing companies are the best at fooling Google into accepting bought links as real, natural, links. Google will of course deny all this and tell you that bought links are not counted, that they have developed tools to spot such unethical practices. They of course know the truth.! That if a linking campaign is done carefully enough no one will be able to figure out that the links are not real. That is why new search options are being introduced to try to give the user real results based on real factors and not artificial ones. Some of these sites offer aggregate search, personnel content search and even predicted search based on statistical data. Some leading Israeli sites have entered this realm and gaining recognition as revolutionaries. The manipulators will have much more difficulty with these new systems as they are less link based and more client friendly. Hence, the relevance of the search results is much higher and truer to what the search is seeking.
